Be a Mentor – National Mentoring Month

Since January is National Mentoring Month I wanted to encourage others to share some time with another person as a mentor.  As a person that has been mentoring the same student in the McKinney ISD for three years, I can tell you that you will get more from the experience than you expect and you never know how much it will mean to the other person.

Need a suggestion on where to mentor locally? McKinney ISD’s divisions of the Partners in Education organization is REACH. The program is designed to foster a basic sense of self-esteem, self-confidence and a motivation to learn and improve personal and social skills that will reinforce the importance of an education. Reaching one child at a time is the primary goal of the program and just requires an hour per week.

Currently the program provides mentors for around 400 children in the school system, but there is still a waiting list for students that just need another adult in their life to show interest.  At the annual luncheon last May the superintendent remarked that during these tough times even more mentors are needed as more students and families struggle.

Becoming a mentor is one of the best investments you can make for the future. You just need to listen, show that you care and share your experiences. So whether it is through a local school system, Boys & Girls Clubs, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Big Brothers Big Sisters or you just find someone from your life that needs a little direction or friendship – take a little extra time in 2012 to share yourself and your time.

10 Reason for BUYING a Home for the Holidays

 

December is a big shopping month so is it a good time to buy real estate also?  Many people do enjoying buying during the holidays while some do so purely out of need, but at any rate there are some positives to choosing to buy a new home during the holidays.

  1. Tax Savings. Closing on your new home by Deceber 31st means you can deduct mortgage interest, property taxes and points on your loan on this year’s income taxes return.
  2. Sellers are more motivated.  With inventory still on the market, many sellers will also be anxious to sell by the end of the year so they can start fresh in their new home/location.
  3. If you are buying a new home, there is a chance builders will be offering incentives.  Many builders will offer extras to sell as many houses as they can by the end of the year.
  4. Your housing choices during December are still relatively plentiful.
  5. It’s easier to move.  Many moving companies are booked six or so weeks in advance during the busy summer months.  In the winter it is normally easier to secure the services of a moving company on shorter notice.
  6. A new home for the holidays.  The holiday season is a great time to celebrate your new home with family and friends.
  7. If you buy a home this year you will be able to homestead it on January 1 and it will save you money on your taxes.

Stuffed Cherry Tomatoes
Ingredients:
32 cherry tomatoes
1/3 c. sour cream
1 4-oz. pkg. cream cheese, softened
1/2 c. finely crumbled feta cheese
1 green onion, finely chopped

1 tsp. lemon juice
1/4 tsp. dried oregano
30 fresh parsley leaves


Directions:
Cut the tops off the cherry tomatoes; trim bottom of each tomato slightly to level if necessary; avoid cutting through the pulp.  Hollow out the tomatoes and place upside down on lined paper towels. Cover loosely with plastic wrap; refrigerate to drain for at least one hour; they can  be refrigerated for up to 24 hours. Finely chop the tomato pulp removed from the tomatoes earlier and combine in a small bowl with sour cream, softened cream cheese, feta cheese, green onion, lemon juice and oregano.  (This can be be refrigerated for up to 24 hours.) Spoon filling into plastic bag and snip the end off one of the corners. Pipe into hollowed out tomatoes or spoon approximately 1 tsp. into each hollowed out tomato. Garnish with fresh parsley.
